Culture Camp

HeloThe Kivalliq Science Educators’ Community has been developing and delivering Science Culture Camps since 2000. The camps are organized around a topic of both scientific and cultural interest, utilize both Elders and science teachers as instructors, and students receive two high school credits for successful completion.

Spending time on the land is an important part of the culture of Nunavut. The environment plays such an overwhelming role in our daily lives that it is nightweba natural setting for teaching and learning. Elders, teachers, and students slip effortlessly between the roles of instructor and learner in an outdoor setting that is educational and fun. In this Cross-Cultural Science Camp, traditional knowledge and environmental awareness are taught through active immersion in the outdoors, direct observation of natural phenomenon, and guided hands-on exploration.

Flying students from around the Region to this annual event is an expensive undertaking.  Funding is generously provided by:

  • Agnico-Eagle Mines Ltd.
  • Areva Resources Canada Inc
  • Department of Economic Development & Transportation
  • Kivalliq Partners In Development
